Its ability to change the chemical makeup of a person’s brain and produce a severe physical addiction makes it a difficult drug to quit. We used recent data from the National Clandestine Laboratory Seizure System compiled by the Missouri State Highway Patrol to determine the top 10 meth states in the U.S. Missouri claims the title of America’s meth production capital as of 2019, hosting 27.6 meth labs per 100,000 residents.2 The availability of methamphetamine has increased since 2012, resulting in a decline in street value. California has the sixth-highest number of meth seizure incidents of any state. Meth overdoses killed 232 people in 2017 in the San Joaquin Valley.

The drug is often cheaper than prescription and other illegal substances, making it attractive to those with limited financial resources. According to the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), about 1.6 million people reported using meth in the past year. The program is open to anyone who has become dependent on methamphetamine and has not used for three weeks. To determine eligibility to be accepted into the program, participants must undergo an assessment and must meet the DSM5 criteria for severe stimulant use disorder in the past three years; this is because they only have a limited number of staff and funding. “What we have at the moment is a lack of availability of all types of treatment, of all types of rehabilitation,” Shadow Minister Picton said. On the issue of rehabilitation centres, the Shadow Minister derided the lack of action taken, saying, “At the moment what we are seeing is all of those rehabilitation programs right across the community are overwhelmed”.
